GHANA IMMIGRATION SERVICES
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) is the principal government agency responsible for regulating and monitoring the movement of people into and out of Ghana. Operating under the Ministry of the Interior, GIS plays a vital role in national security, migration management, and socio-economic development. The origins of GIS trace back to the colonial era when it functioned as the Immigration and Passport Unit under the Gold Coast Colonial Police Force. Post-independence, the unit was transferred to the Ministry of the Interior in 1960, and the issuance of passports became the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1989, the Ghana Immigration Service was formally established under PNDC Law 226 to provide a legal framework for its operations.
